WARM - UP
2 Laps clockwise on the rink.
2 Laps Counter clockwise on the rink.
Line up all skaters on goal line. As they get to the first blue line, superman dive. Back on their feet, skate through the neutral zone, to the other blue line. Touch ice with one knee, then up and skate to the red line.
Return - Skaters get to blue line transition to backwards skating until entry into the neutral zone. Turn, skate to the next blue line, then down on one knee (opposite knee) then back up and finish.
DRILL STATIONS:
1) Getting to Know you: Have all of the players line up on the outside of the face-off circle. Coach is in the middle with some pucks. As the coach passes to the player, they have to state their Name. Go around until all are picked, then repeat with other questions. As each pass happens, make the passing harder in terms of strength and speed. Just a nice way to start the season.
2) Dennis the Menace: Depending on the space, you can use 3-5 tires for this drill. The skaters set out to the first tire, then work on their edges, making tight turns around the tire, then - they move on to the next one.
3) Stick Handling: Skaters take the puck out and work their pucks around the cones, working on keeping movement, as well as puck control the entire time.
4) 1v1: Split the team into 2 groups. On the go, they race to the bumper at the end of the zone, coming to a complete hockey stop. Then, the skaters turn and head back in while a coach sends a puck into the slot. First player to get to it is offense, the other defense. Good time to work on back checking, poking the puck clear, and maintaining contact without going body to body.
5) Corner Battle: The goal is set up in the face-off circle, facing the corner of the boards. The team is split into 2 lines, on each wing. As the coach launches the puck into the corner, players move in, to get control and try to score. Either team can shoot on goal.
- Can be 1 v 1, 2 v 2, or any combination including 2 on 1 scenarios.
Optional Goalie Station: If there are enough coaches and goalies that are needing skill work, there is room for an optional goalie station. If not, use the space to enlarge the edge work drill.
