Puck Control Training along the Boards

The purpose here is to work on coming along the boards with the puck while being pressured by the defense, and maintaining control and forward momentum.

SET UP

Outline the slot with cones from lower hash marks to neutral zone face-off dots.

Depending on the skill level of your players, make a corridor along the boards - as narrow or wide as you need from lower hash marks to near mid neutral zone.

Forwards split and line up along the corners, Defense set up at the lower cones.

RUN IT

On the whistle, the Forwards begin their run up along the boards.  As they pass the first cone, the Defense then forces them to keep moving with control, as they skate up the wall.

Defense ends at the last cone, while the forwards loop back in, and return in the slot, shooting on net.

OPTIONS

The defense can be as aggressive or passive as your age group and experience allows.  From mild pressure, to back checking, to poking in with their stick, set teh tone that fits best for your players.

For advanced work, the Defense can transition while the forwards are looping in and engage the forwards in the slot on the way in, creating a 1v1.
