Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted, in one moment, would you capture it, or just let it slip?
Eminem was right. Some opportunities only come once in a lifetime. It’s now or never, so every advantage helps. It was this thinking that led Aaron Wilbur, Founder of The Coaches Site, to invite Gil Scott to speak during the 2021 Virtual Hockey Summit.
Gil Scott Sports Management is one of the longest standing professional sports agencies in North America and Scott, its President & CEO, has represented players, coaches, and management across the NHL, NFL, and CFL for over 40 years. The graduate of Michigan State University is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to helping clients land their dream jobs.
In this interview with Wilbur, Scott reveals what it takes to prepare for an interview and be at your best when there’s a lot on the line.
There’s no playbook on how to prepare for an interview. Equipping yourself with skills and strategies for tackling your next interview is important – even if you don’t have one upcoming. You will eventually be up for a job you want, and this 43-minute conversation will help you greatly.
Scott’s first tip is one you may have heard before: dress for success.
“I may be old school, but I believe you need to dress for success. If you’re interviewing with the general manager of an NHL club, for example, he wants to see what you’re going to look like in a suit and tie on the bench. That’s how he’s going to perceive you and first impressions are very important,” said Scott, revealing this tip helped a current NHL head coach land their job. “He was told after landing the job that he was the only person to wear a suit and tie for the interview process.”
Even over Zoom, dressing for success can make a difference. Pair it with some of Scott’s other tips from this presentation and the other applicants you’re up against next won’t stand a chance.
