Most of us can name a couple of values when pushed for them, but living them in the moment is a different thing entirely. This is where the first two videos start doing their proper work, because self-awareness without choice is just nice scenery, and a value you cannot reach for under pressure is not yet a value you live by.
Key points:
- The sequence is breath, pause, choose, not breath, pause, react more politely
- Your values are the through-line of how you show up when nobody is watching
- The framework we have been hinting at all the way through is TTT, Tough Through Tender, and toughness paired with self-awareness becomes leadership players follow without being told
This story is one of three from Nick Rothwell - be sure to explore them all!
Worksheet (Values in Action): The worksheet has Brené Brown's full values list printed on it with a checkbox next to each, and a "Write your own" line at the bottom. Mark two to six values that genuinely resonate with you. Over the next few weeks, before any stressful situation, ask yourself: am I about to respond from one of my values, or from something else? That single question is the entire practice.
