The purpose of this drill is to get shooters to release the puck earlier and to not always look for the perfect shot. More pucks on net mean more chances to score. Wait to long and the D will get you.
SET IT UP:
Coach take position on the wall with the pucks at center ice.
a cone on each wall halfway between the center ice and blue line signifies the "time line" (highlighted in red for clarity in the photo)
Attackers set up alongside the coach, defense on one wall or the other in the DZ.
RUN IT:
On the whistle, coach sends the puck into the center on the far side of the red line.
The offensive player skates down and collects the puck and moves in towards the offensive zone.
Once the attacker crosses the "time line" a countdown commences. This can be done in order or varied: 7 seconds, 5 seconds, immediate as they cross the line.
When the countdown ends, the defender engages the attacker, who must make their shot without loosing the puck.
OPTIONS:
You can add obstacles to force the attacker to move around (indicated by grey bumpers in the photo)
You can add a second line of attackers and make this a 2 vs 1
You can add a second line of defenders and make this a 2v2
NOTES:
Stress to the shooters that they need to enter the zone and take their shots as direct and on target as they can, but to not sacrifice the puck in an effort to be in the perfect position.
Defenders should be quick and menacing to the attackers, thus causing them (attacker) to make decisions under pressure.
