Watch Kim Weiss describe a defence retrieval drill to work on proper habits like shoulder checks, scanning, and providing proper outlets before gapping up to create a 2 on 1.
Description:
- Drill One, 2on1
- At both ends, forwards dump puck into zone for one D to retrieve and breakout
- Forwards attack defenceman from opposite end 2 on 1
- Warmup version
- At both ends, after the D breaks out the two forwards, they follow the forwards up ice
- Forwards attack the zone 2on0 and take a shot
- After shot, forwards retrieve a second puck and pass low to high to the D on the blue line for a second shot
Key Teaching Points:
- On the breakout, D should create deception when retrieving puck while forwards present good stick-ready habits to retrieve a pass
- Forwards should attack the middle of the ice with the puck and create width to their attack
- D on the 2 on 1 need to gap up and trust their feet
