This is a great drill for defensemen to develop gap control and learn how to read different types of 1-on-1 situations.
Setup:
-
Defenseman starts in the slot (between the hash marks).
-
Three forwards are positioned:
-
One in the corner
-
One on the opposite half wall
-
One near the red line
-
-
Coach stands just inside the center faceoff circle with pucks.
On the whistle, the coach passes a puck to one of the three forwards. The defenseman must quickly identify the threat, close their gap, and play the 1-on-1.
Let the rep play out for 8–10 seconds, then the coach immediately passes a new puck to a different forward.
Progression within one sequence:
-
Corner 1-on-1
-
Half-wall 1-on-1
-
Rush 1-on-1
Key Teaching Points:
-
Quick reads and recognition
-
Closing the gap quickly and efficiently
-
Maintaining good stick position and body angle
-
Adjusting gap based on speed and location of the attacker
This drill gives D-men multiple reads in a short span, helping simulate real-game decision making under pressure.
