I'm doing a lot of skills training this summer. We have an excellent group of local kids who will be coming back to our academy or moving on to junior hockey, plus there are some pros who come back who inevitably want to skate.  Yesterday one of the kids asked what we'd be doing - the gym is for mass, the ice is for cardio.

And it has to be fun.

This is one of my favourites. It preaches good habits even though the season is months away. Players maintain good changes if they want to win (and they always want to win). Plus there's an extra constraint if you give out extra points for goals scored on one-timers.

Try it out!

Description

  • Black starts on offence playing 3on1 vs green
  • Black can only score on a one-timer (or make one-timers count for two goals, normal shots count for one)
  • Green has two players positioned behind the goal line - when either of these players get the puck (after a shot or a pass), they pass D to D behind the net and then activate
  • Black has to change, sending one player to defend and two players behind their net
  • Green plays 3on1 vs. black until black gains possession
