For this drill, we are working on getting the motions down for tipping the puck into the net. Using the length of the ice, we can work close, then push back and make more distance, as well as having room for the coaches to watch up and down the line.
SET UP: Make 2 lines, shooters along the center slot headed down rink, and the receivers can start at a comfortable distance between the slot and boards. Ideally the first skater in line sets the distance, and all dress left - some distance apart, so everyone is at the same plane.
RUN IT:
1) on ice tips. as the puck comes to the receiver, they direct the puck using forehand or backhand. Make sure they are not trying to muscle the puck, but rather just directing it with the blade of their stick. Run it a series of Forehand, then Backhand. You can have the pairs get further apart to give them more chances and greater practice.
2) Push the pairings further apart, and now repeat the same pattern (forehand, backhand) but this time the puck should be coming in the air. Make sure the receiver had their blade flat to give the greatest surface area to hit the puck. Again, not muscle - but technique in getting the puck to move. Run it as the series and you can move the distance apart as you see fit.
NOTES:
Proper stance is important to make sure the skater can maintain balance in their efforts. This is good to practice now to keep it in muscle memory
Make sure the receiver is not chopping down on the puck, instead of deflecting.
