From two lines in the corners, players race to u_shaped area in the slot made from bumper pads. Coach spots puck into the pads to initiate the entry from either side. The first player to the puck attempts an exit and the second defends, trying to strip and take away the puck for their own exit attempt. A successful escape allows for an attack of the net with close defensive checking pressure from the opponent.
This simple, open ended drill simulates a small area battle and creates conditions useful to teach individual offensive loose puck retrieval and protection tactics, and simultaneously individual defensive tactics. It is recommended that the coach identify a tactical emphasis and reinforce their players' ideal skill choices, execution and success.
Key Execution Points: 2 lines from the corners race to get the loose puck on coaches whistle or command 1vs1 battle to escape out of the top for a chance to score "Live" drill battle to the net with 1 shot and a rebound encouraged
Key Teaching Points: Ideal fast-starts, race to loose puck Head up, scan the ice and Thunderdome, see entry, see exit and find the checking pressure. Evade. Player with puck (offense) change directions, protect the puck, jump to exit quickly Offensive player stay strong on feet (Wide stance, Power Position) Offensive players use stick and body fakes, fients and dekes, lookaways and deception. Be creative Player second in, or late use checking skills to steer, angle, and control, and prevent a scoring chance Defender stick on puck, player on player prevent exit and deflect/deter attack on net Use five stick checks Recover puck...to switch roles On exit, the player with the puck is to find the net, shoot quickly, skating to and aligning the shot for the best available angle for the shot in the circumstances Both players follow up for a rebound, either for a second chance or to clear the puck
Variation: Progress to 2vs2 then 3vs3 In each variation trail, challenge players to pre-determine a group tactic from the corner. Ask them to discuss with their partners if..."Both players will enter the Thunderdome, or not?" "Who will be a passing option?" "Who will go to the net first?" etc.
