Rugby on Ice Game (no goaltenders)

Purpose:

The Rugby on Ice Game is a fun way to teach principles of breaking-out versus forechecking.

It also works well in a station-based practice, for a station without goaltenders.

Rules:

  • Play 3on3 in one end-zone
  • The Blue and Goal lines serve as the endzones, and teams must carry the puck over the line for a point, under control!
  • Can pass in any direction.
  • Use pylons to shrink the width based on player age and the amount of time/pressure you want to apply.
  • If the puck goes out of bounds, it changes possession.

Optional Rules:

  • Play 4on4
  • Play in the NZ to simulate regrouping vs NZ forechecking.
  • If you lose the puck at/over the goalline then your team loses a point.
  • Divide the goaline into 3 sections, if you cross through the middle section it counts for 2 points, through the outside sections count for 1.
  • Can only pass backwards, like real rugby, to encourage gaining speed behind the puck.
  • Amp-up the intensity by playing "winners" - the scoring team keeps the puck, make the D earn it back.
