The bulk of the play in every hockey game unfolds along the boards. That’s why the boards exist, to keep the game contained! Hockey players naturally desire time and space to make a play, but the best ones in every league can make a play in limited time and space. Usually, those key plays are in an effort to get the puck into a better scoring position, which is in the middle of the ice.
Kim Weiss has turned this fundamental component of the game into a small-area game with big-game connotations. Weiss’ drill is a fun and competitive way to encourage players to make decisions to improve the condition of the puck and build skill at the same time.

Drill Description
- Players play 1-on-1 with an additional outlet player from the top of the circle down on one side of the ice
- The outlet player can move in a confined space; the two players playing 1-on-1 can move anywhere
- One player is on offence, one on defence; the offensive player gets to use the outlet player
- The coach spots a puck to start the 1-on-1; players get to play 3 pucks
- Scoring system: if the offensive player scores, it’s 3 points; if the outlet scores, it’s 1 point
Key Teaching Points
- Escape on first touch - when the offensive player gets the puck, they need to move quickly and play fast
- No dust: move the puck quickly and get open for a return pass or a rebound
