The emphasis at U14 (Bantams USA Hockey) shifts to teaching game skills. We still use the small area cross ice piece at the beginning of practice for 15 minutes. The next phase (hard skills) will focus more on game situations like face offs in all three zones and win/lose coverages, odd man situations in all three zones , and 2-1 movement in numerous situations.

Of particular note will be the 2-1 play with half wall - to d in O zone with a defender creating pressure. Of critical importance is to get the D to move laterally and the half wall forrrad moving up the wall to insure a clear passsing lane. We will also teach scissors plays along the wall and cycling in the corners.

I still think fundamental hard skills (skating/passing) are an important part of practice however with pracice ice being in short supply the players will need to get that done in the off season.

Because we rarely get full ice practices we will increase our game count to 60 games and bench coach as much as possible (no, not yelling from the player box). Off ice sessions before ice time in the locker room and having a white board on the bench during games to go over reminders.

The biggest challenge is getting players away from the puck to play hard on the d side and to have the habit of a center drive on offense. These are habits they need to learn.

On breakouts they tend to get to far ahead of the play coming out of the D zone and are left on the wrong side of the puck in the event of neutral ice turnovers (Edmonton got burned a couple times in the last week. One for sure ended up in their net. )

There are literally thousands of ideas, drills and advice on this site and others. We need to be very selective in what we do after assessing the strengths and weakneess of our team each year. Getting the right mix of focus points that are transferrable to the games is critical with each team.

Regardless of your drill or activity selection be sure that every player gets 35 + minutes of meaningfull activity in a 60 minute session. That means 4 plus players minimum in every drill.
