Drill: Picks / screens - read and act

Setup:

  • Three players skate around the faceoff circle.

  • Coach is positioned in the corner with pucks.

  • All players stay in constant movement until the whistle.

Execution:

Whistle & Puck Release:

  • The coach blows the whistle and shoots a puck into the corner.

Player Roles:

  • Closest player to the puck: retrieves the puck off the wall, protects it, and attempts to pass it back to the coach.

  • Second closest player: picks up the third player and screens him from attacking the puck carrier.

  • Third player: pressures the puck carrier and attempts to steal the puck before the pass is made.

Key Points:

  • Quick reaction to the whistle and loose puck.

  • Strong puck protection along the wall.

  • Effective body positioning to screen an opponent.

  • Accurate pass under pressure back to the coach.

  • High compete level and constant movement.
