During a recent game between the Winnipeg Jets and the Anaheim Ducks, a goal was created from a moment that happens hundreds of times in every hockey game, a routine breakout.
Winnipeg begins moving the puck out of their zone. The puck carrier is under pressure and tries to shovel the puck forward with one hand to a teammate to start the rush. It’s a play players make all the time when they feel pressure closing.
But what happens next is where the lesson lives.
The Ducks forechecker doesn’t disengage.
Instead of peeling away once the puck appears to be moving up ice, he stays attached to the play for one more second. He battles over top of the Jets player, tracks the puck as it slides toward the blue line, and arrives at the perfect moment to intercept it before it exits the zone.
In an instant, the play flips.
The Ducks turn the loose puck into a 2-on-1 opportunity, and seconds later the puck is in the back of the net.
