Getting the puck off the wall is one of the most important skills a winger can possess. Most of the game is played near the boards, so it's the teams and players who can get the puck to the middle of that have more success.

Why? Because when you're jammed on the boards the defenders are happy. There's only one or two ways you can go, so you're contained. When a team has possession of the puck inside the dot lines they're dangerous because they can take it in any direction.

So let's get the puck off the wall, but let's make it fun and add a scoring system.

Description

  • Start with 3 separate 1on1's - one inside the centre circle, and two along the boards on each side
  • Coach spots a puck anywhere along the boards
  • Players try to retrieve puck and pass to teammate inside centre circle
  • That player then has to pass to teammate on the other side of the neutral zone
  • That player then has to self-chip against the boards and start over
  • Once the puck touches the boards a new rep has started - the opponent can steal the puck at any time and pass to their teammate in the middle

Skillset Required

  • Scan the ice behind you before retrieving the puck
  • Work away from the puck to be available and stick ready
  • No dust, pass the puck quick
  • 1 point for each pass into centre ice circle, first team to 5 wins
