It's simple but not easy.

We often talk about having a presence in front of the net. About blocking the goalie's view of the shot. But we don't talk enough about screenong the start of a pass. This requires always staying in line between the puck and the goalie. Some teams call it the "BIG MAN" to better highlight the role of the net front player, whether in power play or 5- on -5.

Key points:

  1. Use the same mindset as a goalie. Always face the puck and use shuffle skating when playing high in the zone.
  2. Move forward, don't stay close to the zone to take more space. This will block the goalie's view more effectively. (Just as a goalie would do to cover more space)
  3. Take up space in front of the net, make yourself look big.

Davos (Switzerland) has been very effective this season, but it's no coincidence. The players are all on the same page and demonstrate a high level of hockey IQ.

We can also see the bumper creating the passing lane "cross pass"

Most people will notice the player who scores and the player who make the pass. Obviously, the execution is excellent. But i think it's important to show our young players how to work without the puck and develop their hockey IQ. The player in front of the net and the bumper didn't make a direct play with the puck at that moment, but it's undeniable that without them, nothing would have been possible.

It's simple, but not easy.
