Leadership isn’t always about making people feel good. Sometimes, it means having the conversation nobody really wants to have.

As a coach, that might mean talking to a player about their effort or attitude. It might mean addressing something with a parent. It might mean holding someone accountable when it would be easier to just let it go.

Those conversations aren’t easy. Sometimes you know the person is going to be upset, and you still have to have the conversation.

But avoiding it doesn’t make the problem go away. Most of the time, it just makes it worse.

I’ve learned that being a good leader means being willing to have those uncomfortable conversations but doing it the right way.

Be honest.
Be direct.
Be respectful.
Listen.
And be consistent.

You don’t have to make everyone happy to be a good leader.

Sometimes leadership is simply having the guts to say what needs to be said.
