Have you ever watched an NHL superstar dangle through three defenders and wondered how they make it look like they've got a forcefield around them, gliding past checks like they're not even there?

That's the illusion John Riley set out to break down when he took the ice at TCS Live in 2023 for a session on creating offensive opportunities by invading space. The goal for offensive players, Riley explained, isn't to avoid defenders. It's to go right through them.

Riley is currently Head Amateur Scout for the Tampa Bay Lightning and a former Assistant Coach with the Norwegian Men's National team. His background also includes time as a Player Development Coach with the Philadelphia Flyers, an NCAA Assistant Coach, a high school Head Coach, and an extensive history with USA Hockey.

Riley's session started by breaking down clips of NHL superstars creating separation on offence, then flipped the lens: instead of treating those moves as untouchable highlight-reel talent, he showed coaches how to teach them. The idea is simple once you see it. The most dangerous offensive players aren't sliding around defenders, they're using their body to get inside a defender's personal space and take it away from them.

From there, Riley walked through five specific moves players can use to invade that space and create scoring chances: Space Invader, Cut Back, Tarasenko, Stutter Step, and Under the Bridge. Each one gives players a different way to get body position on a defender rather than skate wide and hope for an opening.

It wasn't just a video breakdown. After showing the NHL examples, Riley had players get on the ice and reenact the moves themselves through invasive drills, turning what looked like individual talent into something coachable and repeatable.

Riley's approach reframes a skill most coaches treat as pure talent into something that can actually be taught. Instead of hoping a gifted player figures out how to create separation on their own, coaches walk away with five concrete moves they can install into practice, and a different way of thinking about what "beating a defender" really means.
