ICING:  Occurs when then player is on their side of the center line (shown here in the shaded box) and passes or shoots the puck the length of the ice, and it crosses the opposing teams goal line without being touched.

This can happen at full strength or on the power play.

It will be called icing if the linesman or referee feels that the defense will reach the puck before an offensive player does.  They make this decision as the puck passes the defensive zone face off dots (shown as the yellow dashed line).

A referee may call off icing for a few reasons:

  • The puck is touched by another player of the offense before crossing the goal line.
  • The puck is touched by a defensive player before crossing the goal line.
  • The goalie plays the puck.

If icing is called, the faceoff will come all the way back to the initial shooter/passers zone. (shaded area)
