The names of the positions is related to the direction that the players are facing up the ice.  Goalie's Right Hand, Right Defense.  Goalie's Left Hand, Left Defense.

The defense covers their own side, up through the neutral zone, and stopping just inside the blue line in the offensive zone, where they can aid on the attack, and keep the puck down low and in the zone for the attack.
