By using skating, deception, and the net as an “obstacle,” D can bait forecheckers into chasing behind the net. As the D wheels, stops, or cuts back tight behind the net, they force the forechecker to get hung up, creating time and space while opening up the next play 

When done effectively, beating F1 not only creates the first advantage, but often draws a second forechecker to the puck, creating additional time and space for the puck carrier and support players as the play transitions up the ice
