Laura Schuler is the Head Coach of the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team, where she returned in 2021 and helped the Bulldogs reach the 2022 NCAA championship game. She also led Canada's women's national team at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Her drill teaches forwards to read and react as a triangle in the defensive zone, with each player taking a different support role.
Description
- Start with two D on the blue line and three forwards in motion in the defensive zone.
- The coach spots a puck in the corner. The first forward challenges for the puck while the D pinch hard.
- The second forward provides north or chip support.
- The third forward provides middle support.
- Once the puck breaks out, the same three forwards return to the zone for a second puck.
Teaching Points
- Win the race to the puck, but make sure the players scan behind them.
- How quickly the forwards can attack depends on how fast they communicate and read what their teammates are doing.
