Bill Ranford is the Director of Goaltending with the LA Kings and a two-time Stanley Cup winner as a goaltender with the Edmonton Oilers. He has coached the Kings' goaltenders since 2006, helping the team win the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014. His pre or post-practice drill builds confidence between the pipes through traffic, lateral and wrap-around situations.
Description
- The drill starts with a coach on the hash marks and pucks at the top of the circle.
- Part 1: a forward starts in front of the net to screen the goalie while another player shoots from the top of the circle. Play out rebounds in tight.
- Part 2: the player returns to the net front after the rebound. The shooter taps their stick to give the screening player the green light to pop out to the opposite side of the crease, then passes to them for a lateral save.
- Part 3: the coach rims a puck around to the back of the net. The net front player collects it and can wrap around to either side, while the original shooter goes to the net for a rebound.
Teaching Points
- Start slow with shots and make sure players are screening the goalie.
- Be intentional between parts and make sure the goalie is moving side to side properly.
