Drill Description:

  1. Players are split between both benches.
  2. On the whistle, the coach rims or fires a puck toward either corner near the blue line.
  3. One player from each bench jumps off — one becomes the offensive player, the other the defender.
  4. Both players must skate around the faceoff dot closest to their bench before engaging in the play.
  5. The player who retrieves the puck becomes the offensive player, aiming to attack and score.
  6. The defending player focuses on proper angling and taking away time and space.
  7. If the defender gains possession, they immediately transition to offence and try to score.

Defensive Focus:

  • Effective angling and route selection
  • Proper gap control and timing
  • Stick positioning (stick on puck, deny middle)
  • Stop on pucks, avoid circling

Offensive Focus:

  • Attack with speed off the retrieval
  • Drive the middle lane to create high-danger chances
  • Protect the puck under pressure
  • Use cutbacks or deception if the defender closes the gap early

Progressions:

  • Start with 1-on-1. Advance to 2-on-2 and then 3-on-3 as players become more comfortable.
