Purpose:
This drill is all about resilience, compete level, and conditioning. Players battle in tight space under pressure, then immediately shift into a full-speed race for puck possession. It challenges players to stay mentally locked in, physically tough, and explosive even when fatigued.
Drill Description:
Step 1:
One puck is placed inside a faceoff circle. Two players (F1 & F2) jump in and battle to maintain puck possession — think keep-away style.
Step 2:
Players will battle for roughly 15–20 seconds
Step 3:
The coach blows the whistle — both players explode out of the circle and sprint to center ice, where a coach has placed a second puck. The 1-on-1 continues up ice to the net.
Step 4:
As soon as the first two players exit the circle, the next two players jump in and start their battle — keep the drill flowing with minimal downtime.
Key Points for Players
- Compete hard. Win puck battles, protect with your body, and stay strong on your edges.
- Stay low. Use leverage and puck control.
- Stay clean. Battle hard without careless contact.
Coaching Tips:
- Keep reps short and high intensity.
- Demand clean battles with real effort — not a wrestling match
- Mix up matchups to keep players honest. Watch for body language: who keeps battling when tire
