I'm always trying to think of a delicate way to tell the players that they can play at a high level even if they can't skate. Or shoot. It's usually more natural on the ice, but it's true. The most important skill a young player can learn is passing. And not just how to pass, but when to pass.

And how many people are responsible for a good pass? At least two, if not more. The work off the puck is just as important. If a players is demanding the puck but they're not open or their stick isn't in a ready position, then the pass won't happen.

And if it doesn't happen once, it will likely fail again. Bad passing is contagious, but fortunately so is good passing.

Erik Karlsson Passing Habits

In your skill development sessions, start with passing this season. Make it a natural fundamental for your team so they develop habits with and without the puck.

  • Always stick ready
  • Move to get open
  • Work to position to be an option
  • Top hand high off the body
  • Bottom hand on the hip (deception)

Here's an ultra-simple practice plan you can steal to kickstart your team's passing habits this year.
