Setup:
Use an ice marker or bingo dabber to modify the offensive zone. Extend the goalie crease outward (as shown in the diagram) to create a net-front boundary, and draw a line just above the top of the circles to separate the high ice from the middle area.
Each team has:
-
1 player in the high ice area
-
1 player in the net-front area
-
2 players in the middle section
The coach begins the drill by dumping a puck into the zone.
Rules:
For a team to establish offensive possession, the puck or players must switch boundaries, meaning the puck carrier must pass to or receive a pass from a teammate in a different zone or the puck carrier must switch with a player from around area. (high, middle, or net-front).
Purpose:
This small-area game is designed to build offensive awareness and support habits:
-
Ensures teams maintain a net-front presence.
-
Encourages layered support, so if a defenseman dives or activates offensively, another player recognizes it and covers the space.
