And when it comes to pro shot selection, it's impossible to find a larger collection of pros than the 2026 Winter Olympics.

There are two primary sections in Brandon Naurato’s course Mastering Pro Shot Selection and Goal Scoring: shots off the pass and shots off the carry. The 2026 Winter Olympics, where the margins are razor thin and decisions have to be instant, serves as an excellent case study.

In the course, Naurato starts with simple concepts and exercises to practice setting the puck after receiving a pass. If you watch the clips you can see that for the most parts players receive the puck and shoot in one motion.

There's usually no extra handle, no delay, unless the moment calls for it and there's room. The players catch and release before the goalie can set or before coverage recovers. That’s exactly what Naurato emphasizes. The pass creates the advantage, but the longer ythe shooter holds the puck it, the more that advantage disappears. If we want our players to score more at higher levels, we have to train them to recognize that moment and trust it.

That's what pro shot selection is all about.
