Sharpening Scoring Precision with Tight Target Hockey Drills

In today’s fast-paced game, scoring opportunities are often few and far between. Players need to be able to find and exploit the smallest gaps that the goalie gives. That’s why a simple yet highly effective drill to train precision shooting works wonders on accuracy, mimicking the narrow windows often seen in real game situations.

The Drill:

We start by setting up a net against another net, leaving only the smallest opening for players to shoot through. The challenge is clear: players must hit that tiny target consistently to train their accuracy. Each player shoots until they achieve 3-4 successful reps. Once they’ve mastered that, we make the opening even smaller, pushing them to refine their aim further.

How This Translates to In-Game Success:

This drill builds the habit of identifying and aiming for those tiny openings that appear for just a split second during games. When players develop this level of precision in practice, they’re more likely to seize scoring opportunities rather than letting the play die. In tight, high-pressure situations, they’ll instinctively look for and capitalize on those small gaps, giving them a higher chance to beat the goalie.

Check out the clips to see the drill in action and how it enhances players’ scoring abilities!
