I am a huge believer in driving compete in practice and within the team. Some coaches are scared to put their players in situations where they compete hard and get angry with each other, when in reality all you are doing is providing players with a game like situation. Explain to them why and explain the importance of competing hard in practice. 

Here is a practice plan from one of my Battle Weeks where the entire focus of the week of practices are battle and compete drills.  I tend to keep these practices to the start of the year, over the holiday break and then just before playoffs.
