Quick Releases and Changing the Shot Angle

 

This drill was demonstrated with the U18 age group during the 2024 VMHA Prep Camps.

 

Drill Description

  1. Drill begins with the coach firing a puck into the open net. 
  2. Player 1 takes 3 quick strides, uses soft hands to drag the puck out of the net. 
  3. Player can either snap a quick shot on net, or make a move through the pylons for a shot on net. 
  4. Immediatey after the shot, the player tight turns & retreats back to the blueline for a pass from the coach. 
  5. Once the pass is received, player makes another tight/punch turn with the puck, attacks the net for a second shot on net. 

Key Teaching Points

  • Emphasize quick feet and game like intesity.
  • Player should have their head up while naviagting through pilons.
  • First 3 steps are important for building speed and creating seperation in the O-zone.
