Our conversation focused on a topic that’s becoming increasingly important in youth sports: player development through ownership and self-accountability.
Today’s athletes have more resources, more training opportunities, and more support than ever — yet many still struggle to take true ownership of their growth. We discussed how critical it is for players to understand that their development is ultimately their responsibility, not their parents’, coaches’, or teammates’.
Why ownership and self-accountability matter:
✅ They build mental toughness and resilience — qualities that carry far beyond the rink. ✅ They create consistency. Players who hold themselves accountable improve faster because they don’t wait to be pushed. ✅ They strengthen coachability. Athletes who take initiative are more open to feedback and invested in applying it. ✅ They elevate team standards. When individuals raise their bar, the entire group benefits.
It was a meaningful discussion and one that I believe can positively influence how we develop the next generation of players — and coaches (we dove into that as well… stay tuned for the coach's post).
Thank you, Larissa Mills, for having me on and for the great work you're doing with The Mental Game Academy! 👊
Looking forward to sharing the episode when it’s released.
