Purpose:
To teach defensemen quick puck movement into the breakout, then immediate gap control for defending a 2-on-1. Forwards work on timing, support, and creating quality scoring chances off the rush.

Setup:

  1. Position two forwards (F1 and F2) on one side of the ice, along the red line
  2. Place two defenseman (D1 and D2) on opposite blue lines
  3. An extra player standing along the boards

Execution:

  1. On the whistle, F1 or F2 passes a puck to D1.
  2. Both forwards skate toward the blue line to anchor and open for a pass from D1.
  3. D1 moves their feet, get on their front foot, and make a breakout pass to either F1 or F2.
  4. After receiving the pass, F1 or F2 skates toward D2 and eventually passes to D2.
  5. After making the pass to D2, the forwards open up for a second neutral-zone breakout pass.
  6. D1 skates up to the red line to close their gap, preparing to defend the upcoming 2-on-1.
  7. After the second neutral-zone breakout pass, F1 and F2 attack D1 in a 2-on-1 situation.

Coaching Points:

  • Forwards: Attack with speed, make quick reads, and support each other’s lanes.
  • Defence: Maintain a tight gap, stick in passing lanes, take away the middle lane, and force the shot from the outside.
  • Both: Communication is key—talk to each other throughout the play.
