Dear ice hockey friends,

Today I’m presenting a drill designed specifically for pro-level teams or highly skilled junior programs.

Why this drill?

  • I strongly believe that players at this level must train in an acyclic tempo and direction, and every drill should be clearly defined within the framework of the organization’s game system.

  • Game strategy should be integrated into the majority of practice drills.

  • The drill is ideal for 18–20 players, as well as 2–3 goaltenders.

  • Each player’s workload is approximately 20 seconds per repetition, and depending on additional stimuli, it can even be increased.

  • This type of drill not only replicates game-like intensity, but also challenges the mental resilience and characterof each player.

About the Drill

  • The drill runs from both sides, with six players working simultaneously in balanced rotation.

  • There are six different player groups and four puck stations involved.

  • Strong emphasis on skating quality and passing precision.

  • Clearly defined roles and responsibilities for every player.

Recommendations

  • The drill can be broken down into multiple sequences, making it adaptable to younger age categories.

  • It is intentionally structured to allow for additional elements and progressions to be implemented.

  • Timing plays a crucial role, increasing individual accountability and decision-making responsibility.

Short Drill Description

  • The drill starts in the neutral zone.

  • Multiple passing exchanges take place, incorporating the other four groups into the sequence.

  • The first player then goes in for a finish on goal.

  • After the shot, the shooter retrieves a second puck, sends a rim around the boards, and immediately transitions into a hard backcheck in a 2-on-0 situation.

I hope you enjoy the drill — and use it as often as possible!

Best regards,
Oldrich “Olly” Jindra 🏒
