As we get closer to the start of the season, I wanted to revisit a topic I posted about a few weeks ago: the importance of preparation before the season actually begins.

With hockey season approaching, there is a lot that needs to happen before that first practice.

Player and parent meetings.
Coaching staff meetings.
Practice planning.
Communication.
Setting expectations.

These things can sometimes get pushed aside because everyone is focused on getting back on the ice.

But I believe they are some of the most important parts of the preseason.

Players need to know what is expected of them.
Parents need to understand how the program will operate.
Coaches need to be on the same page.

And practices need to have purpose.

You don't need every practice for the entire season planned out before the first puck drops. But you should have a solid foundation, a clear development plan, and an understanding of what you want your players to learn and accomplish.

The preseason is our opportunity to establish the tone.

How we communicate.
How we hold players accountable.
How we handle adversity.
How we work together.
How we develop players.

The season will inevitably bring changes and challenges. Plans will have to be adjusted.

That's coaching.

But the stronger the foundation we build before the season starts, the better prepared we are to handle everything that comes with it.

Don't wait for the first practice to start building your season.
