When coaches/teams use the term “PLAYING FAST," that can mean a lot of things. It is a lot more than just skating up and down the ice fast.
The quicker we can get the puck on and off our stick, the quicker we can retrieve and get back on pucks, regain possession and finally transition on offense, not allowing the opponent to set up in their defensive structure. The faster we can play and control the pace of the game. We want to play the game on our terms, at a speed and pace that makes our opponent uncomfortable.
This drill is all encompassing touching on a variety of things that will allow your team to control the pace and play fast.
We always start this drill running one our OZ sets 5v0 focusing on quick passes and good puck support in the OZ while working on specific OZ sets
We call this OZ Set a Hawk Roll
3 High OZ Set Look
As you can see here in the game clip,The D sprint back to the puck on the retrieval, all 3 forwards work back to support the D on their retrieval. This allows us to breakout quickly by making quick short passes.
