Penalty Kill: 3 on 2 vs 3 on 2

This drill works on both special teams at the same time, but I love how it forces penalty killers to work strategically around the puck carriers.

Most PK drills focus on the system itself, such as a diamond or a box, but struggle to teach the players how to react to the puck carrier with results in players over committing and getting out of position.

In this drills, you put 2 teams on the ice, and assign them a side, players cannot cross over from one side to the other. The black team will have 3 forwards on one side, and 2 defenders on the other, while the red team will do the same.

Forwards try and score on the net in front of them, and defense is trying to get the puck over to their forwards on the other side.

To focus on defenders, they need to keep the play to the outside, and since there are only 2 of them, they can't just fall into a box, but need to apply appropriate pressure to the puck while the other is minimizing good passing angles.

If players over commit and rush the puck, the 3 forwards will find plenty of time and space to get the puck to the net.

Instead, applying pressure and taking away angles will result in forcing mistakes, either the forwards take a bad shot, missing the net and sending the puck to the other side, or the goalie can make an easy save. Or, the try and force passes that are not there, allowing the defender to gain possession and move the puck over.
