Long before social media became flooded with skill clips and stickhandling challenges, Pavel Barber was helping redefine how hockey players thought about creativity and puck control.

Barber joined TCS Live 2017 to deliver an on-ice presentation focused on puck protection and puck possession, two foundational skills that separate players who can survive at higher levels from players who can truly control the game.

At the time, Barber had already built a reputation as one of hockey’s premier skills coaches through his innovative puckhandling demonstrations, creative training concepts, and ability to break down elite-level skill into teachable details. Since then, his influence has only continued to grow.

Today, Barber is widely recognized around the hockey world for his work with NHL players, junior athletes, and youth players alike. Through social media, camps, online content, and professional development work, he has become one of the most visible skill development coaches in hockey, helping popularize creative puckhandling, deception training, and non-traditional skill acquisition methods.

His training philosophy blends technical precision with creativity. While many know him for viral stickhandling clips and creative drills, Barber’s underlying message has always been rooted in functionality: elite hands only matter if they help players maintain possession, create time and space, and solve problems under pressure.

That philosophy is front and center throughout this presentation.

“You know who’s good at protecting the puck? Sidney Crosby. You know who else? Every player in the NHL.”

For Barber, puck protection is not an optional offensive skill reserved for highly skilled players. It is a foundational survival skill at every level of hockey. The ability to protect possession under pressure allows players to extend plays, escape defenders, create offence, and dictate pace.

Throughout the session, Barber demonstrates the finer details behind effective puck protection:

  • body positioning
  • edge control
  • deception
  • puck placement
  • hand positioning
  • scanning and awareness
  • using movement to create separation

More importantly, he explains why puck possession has become increasingly critical in the modern game. As players become faster and defensive structure improves, the ability to maintain control under pressure becomes one of the defining characteristics of elite players.

Many of the concepts Barber discussed in 2017 have since become standard across hockey development today. Skills coaches around the world now emphasize deception, creativity, small-area puck touches, and possession-based habits in ways that were far less common when Barber first emerged on the scene.

What makes this presentation stand out is that it goes beyond flashy puckhandling. Barber connects every movement back to game application and decision-making, showing coaches how individual skill translates directly into puck possession and offensive creation.

If you coach players who struggle to create time and space, lose pucks under pressure, or rely too heavily on straight-line play, this presentation remains incredibly relevant nearly a decade later.
