PAM (Pass And Move)

Overview

A high-tempo small-area game designed to eliminate the "pass-and-watch" habit by forcing players to immediately relocate into open ice after distributing the puck. This is a great game for younger players but can absolutely benefit older players as well.

Setup

 * Divide the station/zone in half with a drawn line.

 * Place one bumper player (X) at each end of the dividing line.

 * Remaining players and coach line up in the neutral zone with a supply of pucks.

Execution

 * Puck Entry & Battle: The coach dumps a puck into the zone, and one player from each team races to gain possession.

 * Pass & Move: The puck carrier passes to either bumper player on the line, immediately skates across the dividing line, and receives a return pass on the opposite side.

 * Scoring: A player earns 1 point each time they complete a give-and-go that originates on one side of the line and is received on the other.

 * Defensive Objective: The defender actively uses stick positioning to disrupt passing lanes, intercept the pass, or work to takeaway pucks and transition into their own give-and-go sequence.

 * Duration: Reps run for 30–45 seconds. The player with the most points wins the rep and earns a point for their team.

Key Coaching Points

 * Explosive Relocation: Accelerate the instant the puck leaves the blade rather than watching the pass.

 * Route Timing & Target Presentation: Open hips toward the bumper, present a flat blade target on the ice, and time the crossing route to catch the puck in stride.

* Area Passes: Encourage bumper players to make area passes to lead their receiver into good ice away from the defender.

 * Passing Mechanics: Execute crisp forehand, backhand, or saucer passes under tight defensive pressure.

 * Defensive Angling: Force the puck carrier away from open bumper passing lanes.

Constraints & Progressions

 * One-Touch Bumper Rule: Require bumpers to return passes in one touch, forcing the skater to explode across the line immediately with maximum speed.

 * Mobile Bumpers: Allow the bumpers to slide along the perimeter to create better passing angles against aggressive defensive pressure.

 * Transition to Attack (Add a Net): Place a goalie or mini-net at one end. Once a player completes a successful give-and-go across the line, they are unlocked to attack the net for a finishing shot.

 * 2v2 Team Play: Expand the game to 2v2. Both offensive players must touch the puck or use cross-line support before returning to a bumper, elevating team communication and spacing.
