Defensive zone coverage is about more than positioning and pressure, it’s about detail execution within the play. In this sequence from Colorado vs Minnesota, the Avalanche initially defend extremely well. Their defensive structure limits time and space, forces pressure, and prevents clean offensive opportunities through the middle of the ice.

However, the breakdown occurs once the puck moves below the goal line.

As the Wild player works behind the net, the Avalanche defender maintains body position but loses one critical detail: stick placement. Instead of keeping stick-on-puck or taking away the passing lane into the slot, the defender’s stick remains outside the hands and underneath the play. That small separation creates enough time and space for the puck carrier to make a clean pass into the scoring area.

At the NHL level, offensive players do not need much. A fraction of time, a missed angle, or poor stick detail can immediately turn strong defensive coverage into a Grade A scoring chance.

This clip is an excellent teaching example for defenders. Pressure alone is not enough to finish a play defensively. Proper stick positioning is what eliminates options, disrupts possession, and prevents dangerous opportunities around the net.
