Mackinnon Reads Hughes Trademark Move Instantly

Most defenders react to skill. Elite players recognize it before it happens.

In this clip, Hughes goes to one of his trademark cutback escape moves in the defensive zone, a move he uses constantly to create separation and turn retrievals into offense. Against most players, it works. The defender opens up, loses inside positioning, and Hughes creates space.

But Nathan MacKinnon reads it immediately.

Why? Because MacKinnon attacks defenders using many of the exact same movement patterns himself. He understands the timing, the weight transfer, the edge work, and most importantly, when the puck becomes vulnerable during the cutback.

Instead of reacting late, MacKinnon closes space before the move can fully develop and finishes through the hands before Hughes can generate any offense.

This is what high-level hockey IQ looks like.

The best players in the world don’t just recognize plays, they recognize habits, patterns, and intentions. Sometimes the hardest player to beat with elite skill… is another elite player who sees the game the same way you do.

Elite recognizes elite.
