Holes open up in a goalie's armour more than ever when they're moving side to side. The foundation of goaltending starts with their stance and posture, so when that gets manipulated in one way or another, the best goalies are able to react to what's happening in front of them.

As offence increases at every level of hockey, one trend is moving the puck east to west, or laterally across the invisible line that stretches from the top of the crease to the blue line. This is done to open the goalie up by getting them moving. It's challenging for the skaters, and it's really challenging for the goalies!

But being behind the play is no excuse. This is where a lot of dazzling saves are created, so it's valuable to mimic that movement in a controlled environment.

This drill, from The Complete Goalie Coach Toolkit, is a simple exercise to build confidence in these seemingly hopeless situations. Moving side to side requires energy in the lower half of the body, but it's the hands that usually dictate whether the save is made or not.

Description

  • Start with a simple shot from Player 1.
  • After the shot, Player 1 passes to Player 2 across the high slot for a second shot.
  • Progress to a second pass or shoot for rebounds.

Key Points

  • As this is used when a goalie is behind the play, ensure the hands lead the way laterally.
  • Arms should be snug to the top of the pads to eliminate seams.
  • Arms should by snug to the top of the pad to eliminate seams
