A few weeks ago, I was speaking with Aaron Wilbur from The Coaches Site, and he reminded me of something that’s easy to forget:
As experienced coaches and hockey staff, we can sometimes take for granted the key elements that make our programs successful. From a teaching perspective, it’s easy to skip over the basics and assume everyone already understands them, but often, that’s where the real gold is.
Those foundational details are invaluable in helping players, parents, and coaches better understand the game and continue to develop.
That conversation was the inspiration behind our next Built From Steel Podcast mini-series: Foundations of Positional Play.
We’re going back to basics and breaking down some of the foundational principles behind positional play in youth hockey. Not necessarily specific systems, but concepts players can understand and apply in almost any environment.
These episodes are a little different from what we’ve done so far. They’re more technical, with plenty of time spent at the whiteboard using visuals to bring the concepts to life.
The first episode, Foundations for Wingers, is out now. Check it out!
