Elite offensive zone entries are rarely about straight-line speed alone.
The real separator is the ability to decelerate on command, protect the puck with deception, and explode into open ice.
In this installment of the Skating Drill Series with The Coaches Site, Calgary Flames Skating Coach and founder of My Hockey House, Danielle Fujita, breaks down a critical game-transferable progression: Zone Entries with Cutbacks.
The Drill Breakdown: Zone Entries with Cutbacks
The Setup: Two pylons placed along the half-wall, with players attacking from the neutral zone dots.
The Action: Skaters attack deep toward the far pylon, execute an aggressive cutback/delay toward the boards, transition into a tight figure-8 punch turn, and accelerate off the wall for a quick-release shot on net.
Danielle’s Key Coaching Cues:
Spot the Puck Close to the Feet: Especially on forehand turns, spot and protect the puck tight to the body rather than dragging it wide where defenders can strip it.
Execute the Punch Without Digging Heels: Load the edges cleanly through the punch turn without driving the skate heels into the ice, preserving maximum momentum and balance.
Explosive Separation Speed: Use the second turn to launch away from the boards, creating instant shooting lanes under defensive pressure.
Where Telemetry Meets the Ice
A cutback looks deceptive to the naked eye, but what does the stride output actually tell you?
Equipped with Scorched Ice Smart Skates Sensors, coaches can quantify the exact mechanics driving the cutback:
Track Acceleration: Measure the abrupt deceleration entering the delay and the explosive burst coming off the wall.
Track Power: Quantify bilateral edge load and ensure equal force distribution through tight turns without energy leaks.
Track Tempo: Gauge stride rhythm and recovery to confirm the skater isn't losing posture under multi-directional strain.
Elite drills create tactical habits; real-time data validates the execution.

Your stride. Your data. Your edge.
