Strong defensive teams don’t just rely on structure, they rely on awareness and communication within that structure.

In this clip, Dallas provides a great example of D-zone awareness during a shifting offensive sequence by Minnesota. As the Wild rotate and look to create confusion, coverage naturally begins to stretch and change. This is where breakdowns often happen, when players get puck-focused or assume someone else has responsibility.

Instead, watch the Dallas defender. He scans the ice, recognizes that a player has become uncovered, and immediately communicates it to his teammates. That quick point and verbal cue allows the group to adjust in real time and maintain coverage.

This is a small detail, but it’s a critical one.

Defending in-zone is rarely static. Offensive teams are constantly moving, interchanging, and trying to force hesitation. The ability to process those changes and communicate effectively is what separates organized defensive play from chaos.

Key habits to reinforce:

  • Scan the ice away from the puck
  • Identify threats early
  • Communicate clearly and decisively

When all five players are connected through communication, coverage becomes fluid instead of reactive.

This clip is a great reminder that elite defense isn’t just about positioning—it’s about awareness, trust, and constant communication.
