Culture happens when you do hard things together.

That line from Rob Zettler has stuck with me since our conversation.

Rob Zettler is a Stanley Cup champion with the NHL Tampa Bay Lightning who has coached 1,000+ NHL games over 25+ seasons. I sat down with him for our HeyCoach webinar, Before the Puck Drops.

We’ve put his ideas and wisdom to work with the teams on HeyCoach to kick off the season. Each team chose one objective to accomplish together over the next 6 weeks. The HeyCoach app provides the daily habits needed to pursue it and tracks progress. We call it the #StrongerTogether campaign, building team cohesion as the puck drops.

I'll report back on the success rate.

Here's a mashup of memorable quotes from our conversation:

Work over hope. When you’re focused on the process, you’re never hoping things go your way. You’re taking steps to force things into going your way.

Repetition gives you confidence. That’s skill-based, that’s toughness-based, that’s work ethic-based. I think you can teach all of those things.

“When you bring a meeting with 30 video clips and expect your players to remember all of it, you’re probably kidding yourself.”

“I’d play that game over a hundred times, and I’d take our chances with it, because our process was so good.”

“You gotta be wary of the coach that’s not willing to share.”

We talk hockey, but the lessons transcend sports for anyone in a leadership position.
