Here is drill that we do with the U15 A1 team at Vancouver Minor Hockey Association. It is a great quick break out drill, that works specifically on chip plays, out of the zone as well as 2 vs 2 zone entries and getting your D to gap up quickly after making breakout plays. Give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments!
Example 1
Example 2
Description
- A puck is spotted behind the net. On the whistle, the D grabs the puck from behind the net and makes a breakout pass to F1, on the wall.
- The wall side forward receives the pass, comes off of the wall and makes a chip pass to the slashing F2.
- While this is taking place, the high D pinches down the put pressure on the board side F
- From here, both D sprint to the opposite side of the ice to take a 2 vs 2 from the F's on the other side.
Key Points
- Promote good D habits by getting D to have their eyes up on the puck retrieval and making a quick pass from behind the net
- Ensure F1 gets low to receive the pass and comes off the wall to ensure a good angle on the chip pass
- Encourage F2 to call for chips. Communication is key!
- After the breakout portion of the drill, ensure D gap up and put pressure on the 2 forwards at the blueline.
