As an assistant coach with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, Conor Allen is focused on developing players who can think and react quickly in game situations. The Sumo Don Drill is an excellent practice starter that creates repeated odd-man scenarios while rewarding strong defensive habits. Players quickly learn that the fastest way to get on offence is to defend effectively and force a turnover.

Drill Description

  • Create an imaginary horseshoe-shaped playing area around the slot

  • Three offensive players (X's) begin with a puck inside the area

  • Two defensive players (O's) attempt to knock the puck out of the playing area

  • The offensive players work to maintain possession and move the puck

  • Once the puck is knocked out, the coach immediately spots a new puck to a waiting X

  • That player joins the two previous defensive players to form the next 3-on-2

  • The previous three offensive players exit the drill, replaced by two new defensive players

  • Continue the sequence with quick transitions and minimal downtime

Key Points

  • On offence, work away from the puck and jump into open space to become an outlet

  • Maintain good spacing to create passing options

  • Move the puck quickly before pressure arrives

  • On defence, keep one hand on the stick to take away passing lanes.

  • Defend with your feet and body positioning rather than reaching.

  • Emphasize that strong defence earns the opportunity to attack.
