Major League's perimeter is the ringette line to the blue line.
At the start of the drill, only half of the players in each division begin with a puck. The remaining players must compete to gain puck possession. On the coach's whistle, play becomes live, and players battle for possession. On the next whistle, the drill stops.
Players in the Minor League division who finish the round with a puck are promoted to the Major League division. Players without a puck remain in the Minor League division. In the Major League division, players who maintain possession stay in the Major League, while those who lose possession are relegated to the Minor League. This progression system ensures that every player remains actively engaged throughout the drill.
The Minor League division is given more ice surface, allowing more time and space, while the Major League division operates in a smaller area, increasing pressure and simulating the reduced time and space players experience as they advance to higher levels of hockey.
This is an excellent warm-up drill to begin practice. It develops play away from the puck, puck protection, competitiveness, and overall awareness. During this drill, goaltenders can work separately with the goalie coach.
